Good news for those who have family in New Zealand and Australia as the cost of sending money to Fiji and other pacific islands will be substantially reduced thanks to a new website.

The website aimed at reducing cost of sending money from New Zealand was launched by NZ's Pacific Islands Affairs Minister Georgina te Heuheu at the weekend.

Radio NZ reports that the site is NZAid and AusAid funded to improve the transparency of remittance costs, speed the process and stimulate competition amongst service providers.

Heuheu said pacific people remitting money from New Zealand and Australia play an important part in supporting sustainable economic development in pacific countries.

She said remittances to the pacific are substantial, amounting to over 425 million US dollars a year and that it is estimated that 750,000 pacific people remit money every year.

The website provides details for transferring money from New Zealand or Australia to Fiji, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
