The Interim Attorney General has stressed that the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption will continue with corruption investigations despite statements by Laisenia Qarase that they have no powers under the constitution.
Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the interim administration is only following the mandate set out by President Ratu Josefa Iloilo to fight and eradicate corruption and they will not be deterred by the ousted Prime Minister's comments.
Outgoing Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption Chief Investigator Nazir Ali had earlier revealed to Village News that Laisenia Qarase is now under investigation in relation to certain corruption allegations.
Ali said they are driven by the evidence that will be gathered before taking any further steps.
However, Qarase maintains that FICAC has no powers to investigate him.
Meanwhile, police are still awaiting Interpol assistance to investigate the allegation that Qarase requested for foreign intervention from Australia and NZ before and on December 5th, 2006. Qarase who is still in Mavana, Lau, said he is in no hurry to return to Suva and is enjoying working in his plantation every day.
