The Fiji Teachers Union said they do not condone corporal punishment in schools as it is an offence and is also calling on media organizations to be fair with their reporting.
General Secretary Agni Deo Singh made the comments after revelations that the student in Labasa who was admitted in hospital after claims that she was assaulted by her teacher, was not actually the result of her being assaulted by her teacher.
Meanwhile, police spokesperson Atunaisa Sokomuri said investigations at this stage show that no one witnessed the teacher assaulting the student with a ruler and there were no visible injuries.
He added that police are still investigating as to why such claims were made by the student.
It was alleged the teacher beat the student after she failed to answer some questions and was established that the child vomited blood soon after she was beaten with a blackboard ruler.
The student was airlifted to Suva from the Labasa hospital after her condition deteriorated.
