The majority of households in Fiji lack personal hygiene when preparing food which is one of the major causes of illness.
Army head Chef, Sergeant Major Ratu Epeli Kete made the comment during a workshop yesterday at Korovou prison where the Tanoa Group of Hotels teamed up with the Fiji Prisons and Corrections Service in providing professional assistance in a cooking class for inmates.
Kete said in the hotel industry personal hygiene is important adding there is a lack of these in households and villages.
The cooking lessons are aimed at empowering them with useful skills that can assist the inmates in finding productive employment when they are released from prison.
At the end of the two weeks, the inmates will cook for their mothers who will be invited to sample the final dishes on May 31st.
