The speaker of the Cook Islands' parliament said he supports moves by Fiji's Interim Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama to work closer with Pacific Forum Member Nations.

Commodore Bainimarama, who has been on the outside with his fellow island leaders after boycotting the forum meeting earlier this year in Niue, has written to Niue premier Toke Talagi requesting re-engagement with the group.

The Cook Islands' parliamentary speaker Mapu Taia, who is in Australia for a series of meetings, said his colleagues would be willing to back genuine attempts by Fiji to restore democracy.

Taia adds that what happened in Fiji really reflected negatively on the small island nations and they will rally behind Fiji to go back to democratic elections.
