Consumers can expect varied prices on over 1000 items which will come under the 32% tariff band from January next year as it will be at the discretion of the wholesalers and retailers to recover their costs due to the increased rates.
Acting Secretary of the Prices and Incomes Board Lucy Mawi told Fijivillage news that the price of the items in question will not be consistent.
Mawi also stresses that consumer should be made aware that only a few items which will be under the new 37% tariff band come under price control.
Earlier today FIRCA's Director Customs Jala Ud Dean stressed that the decision to increase the tariff band on imported items from 27% to 32% is to safeguard the local manufacturing industry and the thousands of jobs dependant on the sector and to encourage people to buy Fiji made products.
The items which will come under the 37% tariff band from January 1st, 2009 include over 1000 items.
