The Consumer Watchdogs are disappointed at the Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama's directive not to decrease bus fares.
Consumer Council Manager Campaign Praneeta Singh said it is also unfortunate that the Fiji Bus Operators Association has decided to question the legality of the earlier announcement by the interim Transport Minister Timoci Natuva to decrease the bus fares.
The Fiji Consumers Association General Secretary Paras Sukul said they are also disappointed as fuel prices have decreased, however fares remain the same.
Sukul said subsidies and other incentives given to bus operators by government are not for the purpose of simply propping up the industry rather they are established to assist the industry be viable and ensure services are provided to the public.
He said these subsidies must be beneficial to consumers by way of competitive fares, good services and safety.
