The Consumer Council of Fiji would like to warn schools not to force students and parents to buy uniforms, shoes, stationery and other schooling needs from certain businesses by engaging in "exclusive dealings" with these organisations.
The Council has received complaints against two prominent schools in Fiji instructing students and parents to buy shoes from certain businesses only.
Consumer Council CEO, Premila Kumar said that dealing is prohibited under the Fair Trading Decree.
Kumar adds that should school principals or managements reprimand parents/guardians to their children for defying their directive to purchase school requirements from the school selected trader/supplier, they should without hesitation lodge their complaint with the office of the Consumer Council of Fiji, Fair Trading and Consumer Affairs Department or the Ministry of Education.
Kumar said she will meet with the Education Ministry regarding the matter.
