Consumer Council wants control on unlicensed electricians
Chief Executive Officer Premila Kumar alleges that these advertisements mislead consumers to unknowingly engage the services of unlicensed electrical contractors posing fire safety hazards and high level risks to consumers.
Kumar said they did a research in the past two months after receiving complaints and found some business listed in the Yellow Pages are allegedly operating without a license from the Fiji Electricity Authority.
The Council is disappointed that FEA as regulators is not doing its job which puts consumers at risk, and Kumar said when they report to FEA, the authority's response is that nothing can be done because they are unlicensed.
However, one of the companies alleged to be operating without a licensed electrician has denied these allegations.
National Energy Limited's Managing Director Aiyaz Ali said they have qualified electricians who work for the company.
Questions sent to the FEA CEO Hasmukh Patel on the matter remain unanswered at this stage.
