Consumer Council unhappy with self service initiative
The new self-service system is expected to come into force on the 20th of this month and the Fiji Fuel Retailers Association President Baljeet Singh said price control and increasing costs have made it impossible for them to earn a reasonable rate.
However, Consumer Council Chief Executive Officer, Premila Kumar said the council believes that the association should provide evidence of their members not making any profits and details on those operators who have made losses and those that have closed down.
The Council also said that sale of fuel is not the only service provided by service stations as they also provide services such as car wash, small shops and tyre change and that these services would be an extra source of income for the service station operators.
However, Fuel Retailers Association President, Baljeet Singh said the association members were open to proposals from their former employees to start their own businesses.
He also added that their own service stations are barely profitable and that one of the association's largest operators only achieved a modest profit on four of the 11 stations and others made a loss.
