Consumer Council Issues Stern Warning
This is the stern warning from the Consumer Council of Fiji who said they are receiving complaints from people borrowing money from moneylenders and from the moneylenders themselves that people do not pay the money back on time.
Council's spokesperson Shalvin Prasad said after a survey, the council found that the reason of borrower dissatisfaction was high interest rates where they felt cheated and faced harsh or unreasonable terms and conditions of the loans.
He said they found out that people mainly borrowed money to meet daily family needs, pay bills and meet children's educational needs, for drinking and socializing, for visa arrangements, for travelling expenses, fundraising for mataqali, payments for cane cutters, rent payment and for funerals.
Prasad is urging people not to borrow money from moneylenders who do not have the license for the job as it is illegal and nobody will be able to help the borrower afterwards.
