Talks are underway between the Ministry of Fisheries and the qoliqoli owners in the country to have all fishing grounds declared protected areas to ensure there is no illegal commercial fishing.
Interim Minister for Fisheries Joketani Cokanasiga confirmed to Fijivillage that following the declaration of two qoliqoli sites in Macuata and Gau as protected sites, other qoliqoli owners also want their resources protected.
Cokanasiga stresses that fish wardens will patrol these waters to keep out illegal fishermen and ensure that the licensed operators remain within their quota.
