The best option now is to present these ideas to an independent forum which may then lead to parliament being recalled to allow for these changes.
These are the views of one of the architects of the 1997 constitution Professor Brij Lal in light of the recommendations put forward by the National Council for Building a Better Fiji (NCBBF) on electoral reform.
Lal said these NCBBF recommendations require careful thinking by the Fiji people, however, he added it looks like there is consensus to move away from a racially based electoral system.
The NCBBF earlier this week announced major recommendations to the current Electoral Act including a change in the current Alternative Voting System.
