The Interim Minister for Education Netani Sukanaivalu said a consorted effort is needed to try and reduce the number of drowning cases amongst children after a five year old and an 11 year old drowned in two separate incidents yesterday.
Sukanaivalu said we cannot continue to allow this to happen as drowning incidents are something that can be avoided with proper precautions.
Sukanaivalu revealed that he has already spoken to his officials on the possibility of making swimming lessons compulsory in all schools as a first step.
A 5 year old girl drowned in the Wainimala river at Laselase Village, Naitasiri. The girl went to have a bath with 10 other children off the same age and did not return.
In another incident an 11 year old student of Ba drowned in the Ba river while swimming with his aunty. The victim was swept away by strong currents.
The drowning toll stands at 38 compared to 32 for the same period last year.
