Concerns have been raised on the increasing number of chiefly and land disputes in the country at the Tailevu Provincial Council meeting, currently underway at Nausori village.

Chief Guest Permanent Secretary for Indigenous Affairs, Ratu Meli Bainimarama told Chiefs and members of the Council that many of the cases arise as a result of the Vanua being unable to resolve the disputes.

Ratu Meli adds this has been a trend recently where people in turn look for other avenues to resolve the disputes and urged the members of the Council that this kind of issues should be resolved within the Vanua.

He says only if the matter cannot be resolved within the Vanua, only than other avenues should be explored.

Ratu Bainimarama, though not mentioning any exact disputes, reiterated that these kinds of disputes should be looked into immediately as it is the responsibility of the Chiefs.

The Meeting continues this afternoon.
