Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has raised the question on why NGO’s and other human rights organizations are not saying anything when a political party has come out and said that we can never have equal citizenry and Christianity should be given a prominent position in the country.

Bainimarama also said some political parties are showing a lack of leadership in the country.

While speaking at the Natabua High School Cadet Passout Parade, Bainimarama told the students that these leaders are not setting good examples.

Bainimarama also said those comments have been met with a remarkable amount of wavering and weakness where only a few have had the courage to stand up for their values and strongly reject this attack against the basic notion of equality and justice for all.

He questions where are those who claim to support common and equal citizenry.

The Prime Minister has called on the students to show leadership qualities and set good examples for the other students to follow.

While campaigning for SODELPA earlier this week, former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase said that we can never have equal citizenry.

He had stressed that this is SODELPA’s belief and they will continue to highlight it.

Qarase also maintained that SODELPA’s belief is that Christianity should be given the prominent position in the country.

In the same interview in the i-Taukei language, Qarase said that he knows that we are supposed to be equal in the eyes of the God we serve and we are supposed to be equal before the law but equal citizenry is a hard thing to achieve because we are different people, we are different races, different religions and some of us are land owners.

Qarase said that their needs will be different every time and it is hard in his opinion to enable people to be equal.
