The Fiji Retailers Association has expressed concern at increasing bank fees and charges.

Association president Himmat Lodhia said that internationally the banks have a very tight margin to operate their loans and overdraft as against the interests paid for deposits.

However he said in Fiji the margin spread is relatively very high giving the banks huge profits without resorting to charge the customer high fees.

He said the Reserve Bank of Fiji has been imposing stricter conditions and regulations and it is high time that some of the charges and fees to be restricted and some to be removed altogether.

Lodhia hopes that the recommendations of a banking commission be put in place soon.
