Serious concerns are now being raised on the number of rape cases so far this year.

50 cases in just over a month is a worrying trend as many say that this shows the numbers are increasing.

Many cases involve victims who are under 13 years and most of the perpetrators are known to the victims.

In the latest cases, a 70-year-old man is expected to be brought to Suva to undergo further investigations after he was implicated in a rape case involving a 10-year-old girl on an island in Lau over the weekend.

Police say the man is still being questioned in police custody.

It is alleged that the victim was sent by her father to get something from their house.

Whilst the victim was searching for the item, the 70-year-old suspect entered and allegedly raped the victim.

Looking at the 50 cases so far this year:

There was one case in the Central Division, 13 in the Northern Division, 12 in the Eastern Division, 12 in the Southern Division while the Western Division also recorded 12.
