The issue of a common identity for all the citizens to be called Fijian, the land issue regarding indigenous Fijian making more land accessible and the abolishment of the communal seats were the serious concerns raised at the National Council for Building a Better Fiji (NCBBF) Public Forum on the draft Peoples Charter last night at the Nausori Parish Hall.
While raising his concern on the draft charter, Nausori landowner Napolioni Masirewa said the feeling amongst his people is that they are not being given enough say on the land issues.
NCBBF team member Jone Dakuvula replied that landowners should learn to change their attitude towards the land as the ownership cannot be taken away from them.
Similar sentiments were raised by another landowner Solo Drauni who questioned whether the NCBBF team is true to its word about good governance. He said the state should give back the land it has taken from the Fijians and also the share from the land lease payments should be the same for the chiefs and the ordinary Fijian.
Dakuvula could not give an answer and only said the next government which will come into power can look into his concerns.
