The Fiji Teachers Union has raised concern that the interim cabinet has decided not to backdate the 4% pay cut during the restoration process.
Union president Bal Ram said the 1% was backdated last year and they have begun their fight for their workers rights to get the remaining 4% backdated.
The dates for the civil servants’ pay cut restoration have been set with confirmation from cabinet that there will be no backdating of the pay.
It has been confirmed that cabinet agreed yesterday to restore 2 percent on the 9th of July for Government Wage Earners and 10th July for salaried officers.
Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama who made the submission to cabinet said the remaining 2 percent will be restored on 10th December for Government Wage Earners and 11th December for salaried officers. Commodore Bainimarama stresses that the 4 percent will not be backdated and said that in the 1987 pay cut there was only partial backdating and in 2000 there was no backdating of the 12 percent payment when it was resumed.
He said civil servants have already had a 1 percent pay restoration in December 2007, which was backdated. The 4 percent restoration will cost taxpayers around 10 million dollars.
