The need to unlock access to and utilization of our natural resources such as land, forestry and fisheries is a fundamental recommendation in the draft Peoples Charter on ways to revive the economy.
Co-Chair of the National Task Force on Reviving the Economy, interim Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry told Fijivillage that they have found that following the 1987 coup many of these resources have been locked down.
Chaudhry also said there are no proposals in the Charter to move away from the Sugar industry as it can still play a major role in economic development.
The National Council for Building a Better Fiji is currently discussing the report on the State of the Nation and Economy following which a vote will be taken to finalize the draft Peoples Charter for consultations.
A press conference will be called later today where the draft Charter will be made public.
