Concerns Over Refusal of Accepting 1c, 2c Coins
Consumer Council of Fiji CEO Premila Kumar confirms that they receive on average about five to ten complaints on a daily basis regarding supermarkets, the transport sector and certain bakeries not accepting the copper coins.
Kumar said the consumers are being victimized as copper coins are still legally in circulation.
Kumar said they are also investigating certain supermarkets who are refusing coppers.
Some major supermarket outlets Fijivillage news contacted this afternoon said there is no directive from them not to accept copper coins. However, they said they will look into the matter in case some cashiers are misinformed on the issue of one and two cent coins.
In a statement released earlier, Reserve Bank of Fiji Governor Savenaca Narube stressed that while the Bank has ceased issuing one and two cent coins to commercial banks, the copper coins are still legal tender and should be accepted for payment until March 31st, 2009 and the commercial banks will still accept these coins as deposits.
