Concern for sugarcane farmers in Tavua
Umesh Prasad said that Rarawai Mill is closed for three weeks and farmers have been told to deliver cane to Lautoka or Rakiraki however he said both the mills are currently taking harvested cane lying in the fields only.
He said farmers have been told not to harvest any cane yet as there are many harvested cane already left to be crushed.
Prasad said that the farmers are now seriously concerned as the cane top has started to drop and the sugarcane standing in the fields can dry in three weeks due to the dry spell.
Meanwhile, investigations are underway on what caused the fire and Fiji Sugar Corporation Chief Executive Deo Sharan has asked farmers to deliver cane to Lautoka and Rakiraki for which additional cost for delivery will be paid by FSC.
