Community policing unit organizes workshops for students
Director Community Policing, SSP Unaisi Vuniwaqa said they organized a workshop at the Fiji School of Nursing last week where 200 nursing students took part.
She said plans are now in the pipeline to organize similar workshops at the University of the South Pacific, Fiji National University and the Fiji School of Medicine.
The students are told during the workshops that most common offences are assault, shoplifting, drugs and purchasing of liquor from illegal outlets and being drunk and disorderly.
Personnel from the Fiji Police Drug Unit and Sexual Offences Unit also assisted in the workshop facilitation.
The participants at the Fiji School of Nursing were told that these common offences led to social issues such as abortion or infanticide, a result of unwanted pregnancy, suicide, drinking parties, and HIV/AIDS.
The students were also addressed on some safety and security issues like being cautious of jolly rides and spiking of drinks at nightclubs and parties.
