Acting Interim Prime Minister Ratu Epeli Ganilau said the common name "Fijian" for all citizens of Fiji is a good idea.

Ratu Epeli said although he respects the SDL Leader, Laisenia Qarase's statement that the name "Fijian" only belongs to the indigenous Fijians, he stresses that any positive step that unites the nation should be taken.

"I respect the view of Qarase – he is a citizen like anybody else who has views on any given subjects that are raised. That’s his view. Personally, my view is that I don’t’ have any problems with everybody being called Fijian if it’s going to bring about our identity as one people, I’m all for it. But I’m also proud of the fact that I’m I taukei – I’m known as I taukei and as the first people of this country and as the indigenous people of Fiji I’m happy also and proud of the fact that every person of Fiji can be called Fijian."

Ratu Epeli said people should analyze the draft Charter and think of Fiji as a whole.

Meanwhile, the chiefly home of the Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has opposed the use of the common name "Fijian" to be used for all the people who are born in Fiji.

Close Cousin of the Tui Cakau, Ratu Jekesoni Yavalanavanua of Lalagavesi said it is an insult to call an Indian a Fijian.

"The main Fiji belongs to the indigenous Fijian and other citizens who we are living with together in Fiji – like the Indians – we can’t call an Indian a Fijian and a Fijian an Indian. I think what the committee for this Charter are bringing up will cause more trouble for future generations."
