The Public Accounts Committee has highlighted a number of problems relating to the operations of the Fiji Pharmaceutical Services of the Health Ministry after assessing the Auditor General's report for 2005.

In one case, the committee has recommended to cabinet that it should refer the matter to the police.

The committee said the Fiji Pharmaceutical Services was unable to carry out the Annual Board of Survey which determines the value and quantity of its stocks.

Another major issue is that some drugs are not being cleared either for wrong supply, damaged supply, oversupply or nearing expiry.

The committee is also concerned about the presence of expired drugs and lack of security in the storage which sees the risk of getting into the wrong hands.

The oversupply of one drug has prompted the committee to recommend proper investigation by the police.
