Commissioner of Police Sitiveni Qiliho has directed officers from the Police Special Response Unit to assist in the arrest of those involved in the attack on a Police officer at his home.

Corporal, Vilitaki Bari was allegedly assaulted by a group of men at his home which was as an act of retaliation for a case he had intervened in.

Bari had assisted a taxi driver who was caught up in a confrontation between two men who refused to pay their fare upon arriving in Caubati.

This led to the arrest of the two who were taken to the Valelevu Police Station.

One of the suspects has since been charged with one count each of making off without payment, damaging property and assault.

However, last night it is alleged that one of the suspects who was released came with a group of men to the police officer's home and assaulted him.

Expressing his concerns about the alleged attack, Sitiveni Qiliho said this is the second attack on his officers who were merely conducting their duties adding he will not be taking the issue lightly.

Qiliho says his officers are just doing their job and in the case of Corporal Bari where he was performing his duties even beyond working hours show the commitment they have in maintaining law and order.

He says before acting, people must also think about the consequences of their actions and retaliating against his officers is something he will never condone.

Qiliho has also directed the officers from the Police Special Response Unit to assist in the arrest of the person involved in the stoning incident in Tamavua-i-wai.

Three police officers were attacked in Tamavua‑I‑Wai last month.

The officers were attacked while investigating an aggravated robbery case.

The police vehicle was stoned by some people.

An officer was injured and the vehicle sustained damage.
