The Electoral Commission is currently in the process of analyzing comments made by former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase in a campaign meeting in Davuilevu earlier this week.

In that campaign meeting, Qarase made comments that equal citizenry can never be achieved and Christianity to be given a prominent position.

When asked on calls made by the FijiFirst Party for the Electoral Commission to take action, Chairman of the commission, Chen Bunn Young said they will now follow the processes set in place.

However he stresses that the commission will not rely on hearsay.

Meanwhile SODELPA’s proposed candidate, Mick Beddoes has released a statement this afternoon saying that Qarase’s comments on equal citizenry were taken out of context.

Fijivillage had further questioned Qarase on why he is saying that we can never have equal citizenry.

He had stressed that this is SODELPA’s belief and they will continue to highlight it.

Qarase also maintains that SODELPA’s belief is that Christianity should be given the prominent position in the country.
