Commerce Commission Decides - FEA
These are the words of the Chief Executive Officer of the Fiji Electricity Authority, Hasmukh Patel who said that the price is controlled by the Commerce Commission after which the cabinet approves it.
He said two entities are watching over FEA and it is not as easy to change the fuel surcharge as some people may think.
Patel says FEA buys its fuel direct from Singapore and the bowser price has nothing to do with FEA. He said there is a mechanism in place by the Commerce Commission which has to be followed.
Patel's comment comes after the Consumer Council of Fiji called on FEA to seriously look at the fuel surcharge it is charging the customers who continue to suffer when they pay their electricity bill.
Meanwhile, the issue has also been raised by the President of Lautoka Chamber of Commerce, Natwarlal Vagh in his letter to the Chairman of Commerce Commission Charles Sweeney. According to Sweeney, the Commission is considering the balance of the fuel surcharge currently and will communicate with FEA on the matter shortly.
