The Suva City Council said there are genuine reasons why buses in most bus stands in Fiji need to reverse out of their bays to leave the terminal.

Their comments come after the death of a 45 year old mother and her three year old daughter in a bus accident at the Suva Bus stand last week.

Fiji Bus Operators Association President, Virendra Kewal had stated that nowhere in the world there are terminals requiring buses to reverse to leave the station.

Kewal said this appears to be a dangerous flaw only found in Fiji.

However, Suva City Council CEO Vijay Chand said comments by the Fiji Bus Operators Association are not genuine.

To ensure the Suva bus station is safer, the council has started the construction of a walkway.

Chand said pedestrians will not be allowed to cross the bus station.

He said they will also be putting crossing humps at bus stations.
