James Collins, a UK barrister, has been appointed as the First Parliamentary Counsel in the Office of the Attorney General under the new legal order was established by the President, Ratu Josefa Iloilo.

The position, which has been vacant since 2007, is responsible for the drafting and vetting of government legislation.

Collins has been in private practice as a Barrister for the last twelve years and has vast experience in legal policy drafting, constitutional affairs and departmental advisory work.

Solicitor General Christopher Pryde said the Chambers will now be able to attend to various legal matters more efficiently.

Pryde adds he also intends to appoint two legal officers and a Principal Legal Officer shortly.
