The 2008 Coca-Cola Light Games is currently underway with the 1,500 metres event kicking off the games.
Roneel Lal reports from the National Sports Stadium:
“The cauldron is lit and the first race of the 2008 Coca Cola Light Games has just gotten underway with the 1500m girls open event. And outright favourite to win this event is Fiji’s own gold medalist Akesa Drotini, who has already taken the lead in front of the pack in the opening race. There’ll be three other gold medals up for grabs in the 1500m events coming up this morning. Also running simultaneously are the field events where Marist Brothers High School aims to get its first Gold Medal in the senior boys shot put event which has also just got underway. I’ve been told that officials in the Marist Camp have told their boys that they don’t want just the gold – they want gold and silver - having two athletes in the senior boys’ shot putt. Also coming up this hour we expect three other gold medals to be given out.”
Akesa Drotini from Adi Cakobau School has taken the first gold medal of the Coca-Cola Light Games after coming in first in the 1,500 metres Open Girl’s event.
Her main rival from Wainimala Secondary, Nohela Taqai took the silver and bronze went to Apolonia Dirauvau of Nadogo Secondary.
