Clamping down on illegal book sales
This is after a book shop in Lautoka was raided on Friday afternoon after a tip-off that they were allegedly selling textbooks without the proper copyright.
Suva Book shop, who has the exclusive copyright to sell certain text books found out from members of the public that the same books were being sold by a company in Lautoka.
Acting Divisional Crime Officer Western, ASP Manasa Talala has confirmed that a raid was carried out and copies of text books have been confiscated.
Police are now trying to establish certain facts before proceeding with investigations.
Meanwhile, two more shops were raided in Lautoka yesterday afternoon for allegedly selling pirate DVDs and CDs.
Talala has confirmed that the raids were carried out as part of their effort in cracking down on shops for violating the Amendment Copyright Act which came into effect on Tuesday this past week. He said police confiscated thousands of movies and audio cds which they believe are pirate copies.
Meanwhile, Deputy Director Police Operations, SP Erami Raibe said they are preparing more search warrants to carry out more raids.
Police are still going through the DVD's that were confiscated from a shop in Nadi this week.
More than 5,000 copies of DVD's and CD's were confiscated and police are still trying to establish whether they really are pirate copies.
