Fiji born Petero Civoniceva will play for the Australian Kangaroos in the Rugby League World Cup tournament.

Civoniceva who plays for Penrith in the NRL competition was eyed by the Vodafone Fiji Bati earlier this season to play for his home country.

But he was named in the Australian team with other top players like Michael Crocker, Greg Inglis, Darren Lockyer and Steve Price.

Holders Australia is in a group with New Zealand, England and Papua New Guinea, with three teams making it through to the semifinals.

The Rugby League World Cup starts in Australia on 25 October.
