The Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) at the Ministry of Finance confirmed that the unit has been set up to look into the issue and are calling on members of the public to call the Ministry if they see Government vehicles used for personal reasons. The Unit said they will take the details down and write to the Ministry or Department involved for an explanation. In the past they have come to see that Government vehicles were given to workers who work overtime but if no valid reason is provided then those found guilty will be charged for the mileage and the cost of fuel.
The number to call if you see Government vehicles being abused by civil servants 3222-121.
Please note down the vehicle registration before you call.
Permanent Secretary for Finance Peceli Vocea is expected to comment later on the issue as he is currently in a Cabinet meeting.
