Church Never Ordered to Stay Out of Politics
Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama said comments by a Methodist Church representative in Britain are unwarranted as he does not understand the situation on the ground in Fiji.
Meanwhile, the Citizens Constitutional Forum is concerned about errors in a television report which claimed that Lord Leslie Griffiths was the Head of the Methodist Church in England.
Chief Executive Reverend Akuila Yabaki said Lord Leslie was the President of the British Methodist Conference in the mid-1980s and the report saying that he is speaking as the head of the church is incorrect.
Reverend Yabaki also said that it is incorrect that Fiji's military has only existed for a little over 30 years. He said Fiji's military has now been in existence for over 100 years, and soldiers have fought in both the World Wars. The CCF goes on to say that the report which highlighted that 80 percent of Fiji's population are Methodists, is also incorrect. Reverend Yabaki said Methodists comprise less than 40 percent of Fiji's population.
