A Chinese national suspected to be the main culprit of a drug ring was seized in Fiji after he was on the run for seven years.

The Xinhua News Agency said Chen Guoming, a native of Guangzhou, capital of south China’s Guangdong Province, fled the country after police busted a drug processing factory, confiscated 400-plus-kg methamphetamine and arrested eight suspects in 2006.

The Chinese Ministry of Public Security had issued a red-notice arrest warrant for the 48-year-old via Interpol in 2011.

Chen Guoming remained missing until late 2012 when New Zealand police reported seeing a man with similar facial features.

It was later confirmed to be Chen.

Having received a tipoff that Chen planned to go to Fiji in June, Chinese police with the their counterparts in Fiji and the immigration departments, captured the fugitive last Thursday and took him back to China on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Chief Operations Officer ACP Rusiate Tudravu said the successful implementation of the Red Notice in Fiji was only possible with the cooperation of all parties on both the local and international front.

With support from Interpol, the Department of Immigration, the People’s Republic of China’s Ministry of Public Security and Vanuatu Police, the fugitive who had been evading Chinese authorities was arrested at the Nadi International Airport last week.

ACP Tudravu said they had received information from their counterparts in China and were then reliably informed of his movements by the Vanuatu Police.

Working in partnership with the Department of Immigration, the Red Notice was executed whereby the fugitive was stopped at the Nadi International airport for travelling with false documents.

The current partnership with the Chinese Ministry of Public Security was also a major boost during this operation thanks to the two officers from the Ministry of Public Security who have been seconded to the Fiji Police for a period of 3 months.
