It is the year of the Rat and millions of Chinese around the world celebrate New Years today. However, despite having four generations of local Chinese nationals who have lived in Fiji for over 150 years, celebrations are still very low key.
Fiji Chinese Association President Lionel Yee told Village that many choose to hold private functions as many other citizens are not aware of the significance of this day to the Chinese people.
Yee said local Chinese who call Fiji home are playing their part to move the country forward. He said while they do not demand recognition, more understanding of the Chinese people is needed rather then stereotyping them.
The celebrations include the annual Dragon Dance which was performed on the streets of Suva today by Chinese youths.
