Children in Fiji need to be educated more about the serious health risks of tobacco use.
World Health Organization’s representative and officer-in-charge Dr Corrine Capuano said children can teach their parents about negative effects of smoking which they learnt at schools.
Each year, 16% of the total population of Fiji between the ages of 16 and 64 years are smokers.
Picture warnings on packets of cigarettes will soon be implemented in the country to increase public awareness of the serious health risks of tobacco use.
Tobacco claims more than 5 million lives a year around the world.
