The Chiefs are using painful memories of the 2009 Super Rugby final against the Bulls as motivation for this week's Super Rugby final against the Sharks.

All Black flanker Liam Messam said that what happened in the 2009 final led to more subdued celebrations when they beat the Crusaders 20-17 on Friday.

Messam said they probably celebrated a bit too much when they made the final in 2009 but this time they would make sure that they had a bit of steel about themselves.

Messam added they are willing to do whatever it takes for each other this Saturday.

The Chiefs lost to the Bulls in the 2009 super rugby final 61-17.

Chiefs will host the Sharks this Friday at 7:35pm.
