The Chiefs look set to open their Super Rugby title defense against the Crusaders in Christchurch next week well below strength.

Head coach Dave Rennie said the rest of the group were pretty grumpy after their 31-20 loss to the Reds last weekend but pointed out that they were without 19 of their squad against a host team close to full strength.

All Blacks Liam Messam and Brodie Retallick will be back for that match, after an extra week.

Returnees from Japan Mils Muliaina and Kane Thompson were among those who could be back in the mix for the Crusaders match.

Rennie expected to have almost all players back available by the middle of March, after just two competition matches.

Meanwhile, the Super Rugby season kicks off this Sunday with the Cheetahs taking on the Lions at 3.05am while the Sharks play the Bulls 5.10am.

The Crusaders will meet the Chiefs in their opening clash next Friday at 6.35pm.
