The Chiefs have gone some way to securing top spot in the New Zealand Conference after an intense 28-19 victory over the Crusaders in Hamilton.

In a game that was worthy of a Super Rugby final, a try to Bundee Aki around 10 minutes from fulltime proved to be the difference.

The Chiefs led 15-13 at halftime courtesy of two charge down tries - one to Aaron Cruden and the other to Craig Clarke.

But, victory for the Chiefs means they move 10 points clear of the Crusaders at the top of the New Zealand Conference, with a guaranteed four points through the bye next week.

Meanwhile a Tom English double saw the Rebels pip the Waratahs 24-22 for the first time in Super Rugby history in an enthralling Melbourne clash last night.

In a match dominated by the boot, the Waratahs conceded late under mounting pressure on their try line as English scored in the far corner to put the home side two points ahead.

Woodward had earlier kicked five from five to match Berrick Barnes' identical effort for the visitors, after Israel Folau had scored an opportunistic intercept try to give the Waratahs a 16-13 half time lead.

The result elevates the Rebels up to 11th place, while the Waratahs failed to capitalise on the Crusaders' earlier slip up in the wildcard places and remain eighth.
