The defending champions of the super rugby competition Chiefs kicked off their title defence with a 10-18 victory over the Crusaders in Christchurch last night.

The Chiefs outscored the Crusaders by two tries to one and their second try by replacement James Lowe came in the final minute through an intercept as the Crusaders were looking to snatch the victory.

Both sides looked rusty in their season opener but most of all the Crusaders will be frustrated that they allowed 21 points slip through their fingers in penalty kicks.

The Crusaders also had two players yellow carded while the Chiefs had one.

The Chiefs victory came as a result of a massive defensive effort which is certain to frustrate opposition teams throughout the season if they can keep it up.

Meanwhile the Cheetahs secured their first ever Super Rugby victory over the Bulls when they defeated the 3 time Super rugby Champions 15-9.

Cheetahs had played the Bulls 11 times in Super Rugby but had never managed to beat the former champions until now.

The Bulls kicked a late penalty two minutes from full time which earned them a losing bonus point which moved them off the bottom of the standings.

In other Super Rugby Matches today, Blues take on the Highlanders at 6.35 this evening while the Brumbies will face the Reds in Canberra at 8.40pm.

Tomorrow, the Sharks will take on the Hurricanes at 3:05am while the Lions face the Stormers at 5.10am.
