Chiefs Reject GCC Team
GCC Task Force chairman Ratu Josateki Nawalowalo said there are chiefs from the provinces of Cakaudrove, Rewa, Naitasiri, Tailevu, Namosi, Lomaiviti and Kadavu who have given in their names to become members of the GCC if their Bose Vanua and provincial councils do not endorse any nominees by the closing date.
Nawalowalo hopes that these provinces will now change their stance because at the end of the day the Interim Minister of Fijian Affairs has the last say in the appointment of any chief from the 14 provinces to be a member of the GCC.
He added that they have confirmed the names of the 15 chiefs from the 5 provinces who have shown their support with the only exclusion being the provinces of Ba and Nadroga/Navosa who are still waiting for the outcome of the court case before they make a decision.
Although the Cakaudrove province had earlier indicated they will not support the process of the Charter and the new GCC promulgation, a village of Loa in Korocau, in Cakaudrove has expressed their support to the Interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama.
Following a full traditional Fijian ceremony of welcome yesterday, the village spokesperson said they acknowledged the Government's assistance in installing solar power in every house in the village.
Addressing the villagers, Bainimarama said his administration stands ready to provide assistance to every part of the country including rural areas.
He adds that his government is not based on politics but based on public service where civil servants who are paid by the Government and they must serve the public by providing the service that is expected of them. He also told the villagers that this kind of service-based approach is to be continued by those elected to lead the next Government.
Loa village is the third village in Cakaudrove to give its support to the Government in as many days.
