The Methodist Church of Fiji believes the draft Peoples Charter can cause more coups in the country rather than stopping it.
Newly appointed General Secretary, Reverand Tuikilakila Waqairatu made the statement after the members of the Annual Conference rejected the draft charter today.
Waqairatu said the attack by the Interim Prime Minister that the church is influencing the members not to support the charter is uncalled for as the Church is doing its work as it cares about the life of each individual member.
He also believes while the members have shown their full support on the church's stand against the charter, the Social Services Committee will have to be ready when they will talk about it on Thursday as most members will want alot of clarification.
Meanwhile, Outgoing President, Reverand Laisiasa Ratabacaca in his message to the 800 members has made it clear the decision on whether the draft People Charter will go ahead is in the hands of the interim government.
Rev Ratabacaca said the present government will know the " will of the people" when they will go for elections as the public have been informed through the church on what is in the charter.
The National Council for Building A Better Fiji is now in the process of distributing copies of the draft Peoples Charter to each household before their teams consult the people on their views.
The Fiji Human Rights Commission Chairman says that people can only be adviced to do something but cannot be forced to do it as everyone in the country has the freedom of opinion under the constitution.
Dr Shaista Shameem says that people can be influenced however cannot be forced to sign on something to decide on any issue.
This comes after the Methodist Church of Fiji gave forms to its members to sign today and stand by the Church's decision not to support the draft People's Charter.
