Census to determine squatters
These are the words of Interim Minister for Social Welfare Adi Lau'Fitu Malani who said that the squatter problem can only be looked into once the enumerators have completed their job and a report is compiled.
The Ministry of Social Welfare and the Ecumenical Centre for Research Education and Advocacy will be carrying out a socio-economic survey in order to assist those households that are facing difficulty so that they will be able to relocate them elsewhere.
This is after the Suva City Council revealed that major development works were halted because of the Government's inability to relocate squatter settlements that are on the councils' land.
Meanwhile, The Census Office hopes to have derived figures on the population in Fiji by the end of the week.
Speaking to Village news, Census Director Epeli Waqavonovono, also said with the help of translators they have been able to cross the language barrier to register people from all corners of the globe who now live in Fiji.
Waqavonovono also adds that hiring of interpreters is a small expense to their 6 million budget.
