The conducting of the Census is a demonstration of the Interim Government's commitment to progressively work towards preparations for Fiji's return to true Parliamentary democracy.

This is the view of Interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama who, in a statement adds, that the next step is the appointment of an Electoral Boundaries Commission, which will use data collected from the census to outline proper electoral boundaries.

The 16th of September will be the reference point of the 2007 Census which started yesterday.

Director Census, Epeli Waqavonovono says this means that the census will be conducted based on where people were on that particular day, which is the Sunday just over this last weekend.

Waqavonovono added that enumerators will be asking people where they were on that day as well as other questions on date of birth, occupation et cetera, and that is how the census will be carried out.

The Census will be carried out over a 10 day period to end on the 26th of September.
