Cane farmers may receive compensation for losses incurred by the Fiji Sugar Corporation in the first week of crushing last month.
Interim Sugar Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry said Sugarcane Growers Council will soon do a survey in all the sugar mills to determine the value of sugar lost during week one of crushing.
According to Chaudhry, the council will then liaise with FSC and decide how many farmers will receive compensation.
Concerns were raised that the Lautoka sugar mill crushed over 20 tonnes of cane to produce one tonne of sugar in the first week of June while the Labasa Mill crushed over 110 tonnes of cane to produce one tonne of sugar.
Meanwhile, the sugar stakeholders will meet every Wednesday during the crushing season to discuss the performances of the four sugar mills.
