The interim board of trustees carrying out the inquiry into the affairs of the Fiji Cancer Society is now trying to ensure that a proper audit of the society’s accounts is conducted.

Chairperson of the interim board, Nazhat Shameem said the board cannot say how much money is in each Cancer Society account however the audits will determine this.

She said it has not been easy as many Fiji Cancer Society documents are still missing.

Shameem said the interim board of trustees also had a meeting with the Walk On Walk Strong committee and asked them for their work plan and audited accounts.

The interim trustees will consider the next step for WOWS in their next meeting however their inclination at this stage is that WOWS should become a separate and properly registered NGO with its own trustees.

Nazhat Shameem said the interim trustees are doing all they can to recover all the necessary Cancer Society documents earlier removed from the society’s computer.

Shameem said they have also met with the Western branch of the Fiji Cancer Society.

She said it was made clear that there was a breakdown in communication between the trustees and the board.

She said the western branch will also provide all materials for an audit of their accounts.

The Walk On Walk Strong committee had earlier said that they have about half a million dollars in their account while the Fiji Cancer Society had said that they have a total of $900,000 in their different accounts.

When asked on the total amount in the Cancer Society and WOWS accounts, Shameem said she cannot reveal those details at this stage.
