It is slowly but surely claiming hundreds of lives in Fiji and the problems associated with it are immense, children suffering pain day in-day out, parents stressed over how they can help their children, late diagnosis and death.
Cancer is now claiming a lot of lives in Fiji and the Fiji Cancer Society is calling on people to ensure that they live a healthy life and take necessary action if their child has been falling sick a lot.
Cancer Society President Marilyn Curtis said they are focusing on children and cancer at the moment due to the increasing statistics and lack of education for parents and children.
Curtis said it is now a fact that a number of children have died from leukemia which is a cancer of the blood and is the most common cancer.
The Cancer Society said people should stop thinking that they cannot have cancer as there are a lot of contributing factors to the non-communicable disease.
According to the World Cancer Research Fund, more and more evidence is emerging that increased body weight is linked to cancer and the fund estimates that 30 to 40 percent of cancers, or three to four million cases of cancer every year, could be prevented by good nutrition, regular physical activity and avoiding obesity.
Curtis said people need to act now due to the reality of the situation in Fiji.
